QuickEdit FAQs

If you are using iOS7 or later, it is highly likely you will have the App Store option to automatically update your apps, not manually. This was set by Apple when you upgraded. If you wish to only manually update your apps, turn this option off!

With older versions of the app, the file navigator pane by default brings you into the Local Files area. So you can see all the various files you’ve created/opened in the past. With QuickEdit, once you proceed past creating a ShareFile account, the default file navigator pane is one level higher than before. The user can select between Local Files or ShareFile. After an upgrade, all the old Local Files will still be there. But they are not shown by default in the file navigator pane.

If you go into Local Files and discover your files are not there, please contact Apple support as there has been a problem during updating the app. This is not our responsibility as it is a fault with the App Store. We always recommend backing up your files before updating any app.

This is a bug with iOS7, or if you want to be cynical, Apple's rivalry with Google. If you go to the outbox of your GMail account in Apple Mail, you will see the email sitting there, not able to be sent with a "connection to the outgoing server smtp.gmail.com failed" message.

The problem is with the automatic GMail account configuration in Apple Mail. First, you will need to delete this mailbox entry in your device settings. Then if you add your GMail account using "OTHER" mailbox type instead, and fill in the relevant fields, then the process works.

  • Go to your device Settings > Mail, Contacts, Calendars > Add Account > Other > Add Mail Account.
  • Type in your name, your usual Gmail email address, your password and description (if needed).
  • Incoming Mail Server:
    • Host Name: imap.gmail.com
    • User name: (your gmail email address)
    • Password: (your gmail password)
  • Outgoing Mail Server:
    • Host name: smtp.gmail.com
    • User name (your gmail email address - must be done - not optional)
    • Password: (your gmail password - must be done - not optional)

With the transition from Google Docs to Google Drive, please update the app to the latest version (5.1.1 or higher). This may also necessitate removing the Google service in the app and re-adding it.

From the navigation pane (the one containing the filenames), tap the "Back" button until you see an "Edit" button on the right. Tap the "edit" button and then tap "Add Service" below it. From the list of service links, tap "Google Drive", then "Save", and then "Done'. You will see the service link in the folders below. The first time you tap the link, you will be taken to a Google sign-on screen. Complete your details and confirm and you will then be connected to your Google Drive account.

Ignore the code that briefly flashes on the screen, this is automatically accepted by the setup process into the app.

This is an issue with Google's conversion process, not the app, which strips all of these features out when translating documents to its own GDOC format. We recommend you upload your files to Google Drive in unconverted format, and ensure the toggle in the app for the Google Drive service is set to OFF.

This is an issue with Google's conversion process, not the app, when translating spreadsheets into its own custom format. We recommend you upload your files to Google Drive unconverted, and ensure that the toggle in the app for the Google Drive service is set to OFF.

Yes it does. To set the input to RTL mode, select an RTL keyboard, then tap, and hold the screen for a second. The pop-over menu will show "Select/Select All/Paste". There is a button to the right of the "Paste" button that contains two arrows; tapping this button will reverse the direction of the writing. Please note that the double arrow button will not be present if the current keyboard is not for an RTL language.

You may send an Email via the navigation pane. Tap the blue circle to the right of the filename that you wish to email - the circle contains a ">" character. You will then be presented with a menu, one of the choices being "Email File". If you tap the "Email File" button you will see a "New Message" pane into which you may enter the destination email address, a "Subject" title and the text you wish to accompany the attachment. Once the details have been completed you may press "Send" in the top left to send the email. You will hear a "swoosh" sound once the email has been accepted by the Mail system.

To pass email attachments from Apple's Mail app to the app, tap the attachment name in the email to show the attachment in a preview screen. Tap the preview screen to bring up the function bar at the top of the screen. In the function bar, tap the button at the top right and, from the menu that is display, select the appropriate app name from the "Open in..." list. The attachment will be passed to the app, placed in the "Inbox" folder and opened for editing.

The app makes it easy to show an accurate count of the words and characters in your document. Just tap the Tools button in the function bar and then move the slider bar for "Word Count" to "ON". Once set, the current word count is shown at the top of the screen in a small grey box. Tapping the grey box will show the current character and paragraph count.

You can open or save password protected files in the app, for all six types of file (DOC, DOCX, XLS, XLSX, PPT, PPTX). However the app only asks for open passwords, and ignores other types of password requirement.

It is not currently possible to set or change the password for DOCX, XLSX or PPTX files in the app

Yes it does. From the navigation pane (the one containing the filenames), tap the "Back" button until you see an "Edit" button on the right. Tap the "edit" button and then tap "Add Service" below it. From the list of service links, tap "SkyDrive" and then "Save" - now tap "Done'. You will see the service link in the folders below. The first time you tap the link, you will be taken to a Windows live sign-on screen. Complete your details and confirm and you will then be connected to your SkyDrive account.

Note that Skydrive support is provided to us by Microsoft in the form of an SDK. There is no current support for Skydrive Pro, and unless Microsoft provide an SDK that supports it, then the app will not be able to either.

This is caused by Microsoft Office being a little paranoid, and happens if you have Office 2003 SP3, Office 2007 SP3, or Office 2010 (all SP) installed.

You may see the message "WARNING: Office File Validation detected a problem while trying to open this file. Opening this is probably dangerous, and may allow a malicious user to take over your computer".

Click to confirm to open the file, and save the file in Office. This should remove the message if you later transfer the file to and from the app and Office.

The orientation of printing in documents is determined by the orientation of the iPad when you initiate the print command. So to print in portrait, please hold the iPad in portrait; to print in landscape, please hold the iPad in landscape.

You may signon to Google Drive from the app using two-step verification via the following method:

  • Click the Google Drive account "Settings" pull down box in the top right of the Google Drive page. Select "Account settings".
  • Click the link "Authorizing applications and sites". At this stage Google may ask you to re-enter your Google Drive account password.
  • In the box under "Step 1 of 2" enter a descriptive name for the app, such as "Office2". Click "Generate password".
  • The next screen contains a generated application password. This is the password that should be used in the password field when signing on to Google Drive in the app.

You may completely restart the app by first exiting the app if you are currently running it. Then press the front button on your device twice in quick succession. You will see a list of running apps appear along the bottom of the screen. You can scroll this list left or right until you have located the app. Then press and hold on the app icon until it starts "wobbling". Then press the red icon at the top left of the app icon. The app will disappear from the list of running apps. Press the front button to hide the list of running apps. Now restart the app.

To include the local file folders as a mapped drive use the following steps:

  • Ensure that a WiFi connection is available.
  • In the "Settings" in the app (first button on the left at the botton of the navigation pane) set "Enable file sharing" to ON.
  • Record the IP address/port number shown in the above screen. The format is http://XXX.XXX.XXX.XXX:8080
  • From your Windows 7 PC, right click the "Start" button and then select "Open Windows Explorer".
  • When Windows explorer starts up click "Computer" on the left hand side and, from the function bar at the top of the screen, click "Map Network drive".
  • In the "Map Network drive" panel select the drive letter you require and then type in the IP address/port number recorded in step 3. Please note that this should include the "http://" prefix and the ":8080" suffix.

The folder may also be mapped by typing the IP address/port number recorded in step 3 directly into a Web browser on your Windows 7 PC.

To duplicate a value, tap the cell and hold for a second, or to use a range, tap the first cell in the range and then tap and hold the last cell in the range.

A pop over box will be presented, the cell or range will turn blue and there will be a menu shown with "Cut, Copy, More…"; tap "More…".

A menu with "Clear, Fill" will then be shown; tap "Fill".

The cell or range of cells will be surrounded by an orange border with "handles" in the middle of each edge. If a handle is tapped, and held, the border may then be dragged to cover the range of cells required.

There is no method for actually recovering a forgotten passcode but your data will still be accessable via iTunes, or as long as the device has been set to allow WiFi access, by mapping the device as a drive to your PC/Mac.

To use Wifi you will need to connect to the device via Explorer (Windows), Finder (Mac) or a Web browser, using the address of your device in the form "http://XXX.XXX.XXX.XXX:8080".

You may also connect via iTunes via the following method:

  • Open iTunes and connect your device to the computer using the USB cable.
  • Select your device from the left hand window in iTunes.
  • Select Apps tab from the right hand window in iTunes. Scroll to the bottom of the window and you will see a section called File Sharing.
  • You can select the app from the left hand part of this section. You should then see all the files currently in the app listed. To add a file, press the "Choose Files" button and then select the files from your local computer. When you press OK, the files will get synchronized to your phone and will appear in the file list in the app.

Using whichever of the above methods to attach to the device, you should then copy your local folders and files to an external source. Once this is done, and you are confident with the backup, you should delete the app. This action also deletes the local files and folders. You may then reinstall the app from the app store. As long as you use the same iTunes username that you originally used to purchase the app you will not be charged again - even though you go through the process of repurchasing the app.

Once the app is installed you may restore your local folders and files from the backup taken previously.

Apple's Mail app, and other apps with an "Open in..." feature, will show up to a limit of ten items in the "Open with..." list if you are using iOS5 or earlier. All apps capable of opening the filename supplied, will be held in a list - but only the first ten are shown. The items are recorded in historical order. Apple suggest that only the top ten apps that the user will use for the file should be kept in the list. To remove an app from the list you need to delete it and, if the app is required, reinstall it. The app will then be added to the bottom of the list and may not be visible in the "Open with..." top ten if the number of appropriate apps exceeds ten. If currently listed apps are removed until the app is shown in the list, you will be able to call the app from Mail.

The problem is an Apple restriction, not an app issue. This was removed in iOS6 allowing more apps to be displayed.

Due to a problem with the iPhone/iPod Touch, occasionally the app will show in a language other than English or the langauge your device is set to view in.

Please note, if the app is not translated into your own langauge, it should show in English.

The way to resolve this problem is to set your device's language to English and then back to your own language.

A problem has been identified whereby if you are running a Netgear DG834G router with v3.01.38 of the firmware and your computer is connected to the router via a cable, your iPhone/iPod Touch cannot be seen by the computer.

The reason for this is that there is a bug in the firmware. You will either need to downgrade the firmware to version v3.01.25 or upgrade to the latest version.

Currently the app does not support the viewing or creation of graphs in the spreadsheet editor.

This is something currently being worked upon for adding in the future.

The app does not support macros. This is due to a limitation imposed by Apple. Apps which run scripts must have written permission from Apple, and are restricted to providing minor features or functionality.

The app does not currently support named cells and named ranges.

This is a feature which we are planning to add in the near future.

The document editor does support the undo feature up to 100 levels of undo.

The spreadsheet editor does not currently support the undo feature. This is something we are planning to add in the near future.

It does and may be set via the following steps:

Press the spanner (wrench) icon in the top right. A popup is shown containing a switch, which will let you turn on spell checking for this document. When you turn spell checking on, any mis-spelt words will be underlined with a red dashed line. You can view spell correction suggestions by tapping on the underlined word. The suggestions will appear as menu items. Selecting a menu item will replace the mis-spelt word with the suggested word.

The language dictionary used for the spell check is indicated by the "Region format" in the "Settings" page of the device ("Settings"->"General"->"International"->"Region format").

To connect to the app from Windows XP, you will need to add a new network place to My Network Places in Windows Explorer.

This can be done by right clicking on My Network Places and selecting Map Network Drive.... In the Map Network Drive dialog, click on the link which says Sign up for online storage or connect to a network server. The Add Network Place Wizard will be shown.

Press Next.

Make sure the Choose another network location entry is selected and press Next.

Make sure that the app is running on your device and that the Enable File Sharing is turned on from the Settings page.

Enter the address of your device into the Internet or network address field in the Add Network Place Wizard. For example http://192.168.0.53:8080

Press Next.

Enter a name for your device to be displayed for the new network place and press Next.

Press Finish.

You should now be able to access the app's files from within Windows Explorer.

To select a single column or row, simply touch the column heading letter or row heading number. To select more than one column or row, first touch the heading for the first row/column, and then touch and hold the row/column heading for the last until they are selected.

To insert one or more rows/columns into a worksheet in the spreadsheet editor, select one or more columns and then select the Insert menu item. To delete, select the Delete menu item.

From within the device's main screen, touch the App Store icon. Select the Search tab bar button and type in byte in the search field but do not press the search button. Byte² will appear as one of the results automatically shown. Select this and you will see all Byte² products, including the app. Select the app. Press on the dark blue price button. You may need to enter your iTunes account password. The button will then change to a green BUY NOW button. Press the button and the app will begin downloading onto your device. As soon as the download is complete, you will be able to run the application.

You may do this directly from the Mail app. Open the email, and then then tap the attachment to open it. Once the file has been opened, tap the screen once to show the function bar at the top of the screen. From the function bar, tap the "Open in" button at the top right of the screen. You will then see an "Open in..." list from which you may select to open the file within QuickEdit.

You can print to Apple AirPrint compatiable printers. A current list of AirPrint printers can be found here:

http://support.apple.com/kb/ht4356

You will require a minimum of OS 4.2 on your device and at least version 5.0 of the app.

To print in documents: press the spanner (wrench) icon on the toolbar and choose Print. The orientation of your printing is determined by the orientation of the device at the time.

To print in spreadsheets: swipe to the second page of the toolbar and press the printer icon.

There are many ways to transfer files to and from the app.

The primary way to do this is to use the file sharing feature. See the user guide on how to do this. You can also use a USB cable and iTunes, but you can only transfer files to and from the root level of Local Files.

Another way to transfer files is to do so from your file cloud account. Setup your cloud service credentials in the settings page and you will then be able to transfer files to and from it. For more information, click here.

The last way you can transfer files to and from the app is via a WebDAV server. This can be another device running the app or a third party WebDAV server. For more information, click here.

Often the issue is that the device is connected to a WiFi network and the PC/Mac is connected to a different, wired network. Such networks need to have a "bridge" so that they may talk to each other.

The pre-requisite to connecting to the device is that you are able to "see" the device on the network. First, enable file sharing in the app and make a note of the IP address it gives you. Then open a command window and type the following:

ping {ipaddress} [followed by Enter]

where {ipaddress} should be replaced with the actual IP address that you noted. Do you get successful responses, or is the device unavailable on the network? If you get successful responses, try entering the following in to the command window:

telnet {ipaddress} 8080 [followed by Enter]

Does the screen go blank? If so, you have successfully connected and have proved that the device is available on the network and listening on the appropriate port. It should then be possible to connect from the desktop computer. If you get errors during in the ping response or if telnet fails to connect, then check any firewall settings are not preventing ping requests or preventing a connection on port 8080.

Windows XP is not a very robust WebDAV client and so if you are trying to access files on your device from Windows Explorer in Windows XP, you may wish to consider either using a web browser to access the files (see Import and Export in the user guide) or instead consider downloading a free WebDAV client. We recommend AnyClient. Several customers have tried this and have had success using it to transfer files to and from File Drive. For more detail on how to use this see Instructions for using the AnyClient webDAV client.

Version 3.0 of the app has a bug which prevents the deletion of unrecognized file formats. In version 3.0.1 and above, any file type can be deleted from the app file list.

This occurs because the WebClient Windows Service is not started.

To start the service, open the Services applet from the Administrative Tools folder in the Control Panel folder. Find the WebClient Service and start it. Make sure that it is set to start automatically the next time you restart your computer.

Yes. You can download the Office² HD user guide as a PDF file from here.

This entry describes how to access your app files from a Windows XP computer using the AnyClient WebDAV client.

  • First, download the install.exe from here.
  • Run this file to setup AnyClient.
  • Run AnyClient.
  • Press the Connect button at the bottom of the main window. This will show the Connect dialog.
  • Press the New button and enter the name of your device in the new entry. Then enter the IP address of your device and the port of 8080 in the port field.
  • Change the Connection type to WebDAV and press the Save button.
  • Make sure that Office2 is running on your device and that the Enable File Sharing is turned ON from the Settings page.
  • Press Connect the connect to your device.

You should now be able to view the app's files on your device.

The app provides built-in support for the following services:

  • ShareFile
  • Google Drive
  • Dropbox
  • Box.net
  • MyDisk
  • Skydrive
  • Alfresco
  • Egnyte
  • Soonr

We are also currently compiling a list of which public WebDAV servers can be connected to by the app and the settings required. This list will include the following:

  • MyDrive
  • Rumpus
  • Humyo
  • AirSet
  • SugarSync

If you set up a private WebDAV server, then it must be set to Basic authentication.
