Encrypted email is a method of disguising an email’s contents in transit to make it safe from eavesdropping and keep potentially sensitive information from falling into the wrong hands. Authentication is required to read an encrypted email.
Encryption is especially critical for people who email sensitive information such as login credentials, social security numbers, and bank account numbers, but they’re not the only ones who need it. Hackers, malicious insiders, and other bad actors often try to access email accounts and download important attachments and files they can use to compromise their victims. Sometimes they even hijack the whole email account and impersonate its owner.
Email has always been a highly vulnerable channel, especially when sent over unsecured wi-fi or public networks. Even emails sent within secure company networks can be intercepted by other users. With encryption, emails are rendered unreadable as they travel from origin to the destination. Even if an email is intercepted en route, its contents can’t be read.
This can vary from one encryption service to another, but in general, recipients get a notification that they have received an encrypted email along with an access link. When they click it, an account verification screen appears. If they don’t already have an account with the tool or service, they’re prompted to create one in order to log, access the email, and read its contents.
